Maintain Winter Interest in Your Landscape
Evergreen Care Tips

A few seasonal tips to help your evergreens stay healthy, vibrant, and beautiful all winter long.

When temperatures drop and everything else fades, evergreens become the stars of the winter landscape—adding structure, color, and visual interest when you need it most.

At Balanced Environments, we know that a little seasonal care goes a long way. Here are a few simple tips to help keep your evergreens looking their best throughout the colder months:

Water Before the Ground Freezes
Water deeply before the ground freezes, especially after a dry fall. Even in winter, evergreens lose moisture through their needles, and staying hydrated helps them withstand cold winds and temperature swings.

Mulch for Protection + Moisture
Fresh mulch can make a big difference by insulating roots and locking in moisture. A clean layer around the base also helps protect plants from freeze/thaw stress—just keep mulch pulled back from trunks and stems.

Watch for Winter Stress
Wind, sun, and salt exposure can cause moisture loss and foliage damage. Anti-desiccant applications provide an added layer of protection by forming a clear, waxy coating on needles that slows moisture loss. We recommend two applications per season—early December and late January. This is a cost-effective service performed by our licensed arboriculture

Shake Off Heavy Snow
After heavy snowfall, gently brush off wet snow that builds up on branches to prevent bending or breakage.

Keep an Eye Out for Salt Damage
If your evergreens are near sidewalks or roadways, watch for salt damage—plant-safe deicers and rinse-downs during mild weather can help protect sensitive plantings.

Need help keeping your landscape looking its best all season long? Balanced Environments is here with expert guidance and seasonal maintenance solutions designed to protect your investment and enhance winter interest.
