Keep Your Landscape Evergreen This Winter!
At Balanced Environments, we know the importance of evergreens in maintaining a vibrant and structured winter landscape. These resilient plants offer year-round beauty, but they still need attention during the colder months to stay healthy and stunning.
Here are a few tips to help your evergreens thrive this winter:
Even in winter, evergreens lose moisture through their needles. Deep watering before the ground freezes can help them stay hydrated during dry spells. To further protect against moisture loss, consider applying an antidesiccant spray. Typically used in December and again in February, this liquid creates a thin film over the leaves’ pores, locking in moisture. Antidesiccants are especially beneficial when roots cannot absorb enough water from frozen ground.
Heavy snow and ice can weigh down branches, so gently remove excess snow to prevent damage. Mulching around the base of evergreens insulates roots, retains moisture, and protects against temperature fluctuations. Be sure to avoid piling mulch against the trunk to prevent rot.
For sensitive evergreens, shielding against cold, drying winds with burlap or windbreaks can help prevent winter burn. Winter is also an excellent time for strategic pruning—inspect your evergreens for dead or damaged branches to encourage healthy growth.
