The Zimmerman pine moth is a severe pest to pine trees in the Midwest. The larva can attack and severely damaging most pine species. Zimmerman pine moth can be treated in early spring with a spray for Austrian and Scotch pines. It can also be treated in late August and early September.

Tree fertilization can begin as soon as the ground is no longer frozen and there is no standing water by the trees.

The first fungicide applications can be done if buds have popped, for crabapples, and pear trees. Hawthorns, pines, and spruce trees first fungicide application usually start at the time of the second round of spray for the crabapples, usually late April.

Insecticide soil drench can be done for all deciduous trees. This treatment helps control leaf feeding insects and scale. This treatment lasts for 1 growing year.

Dormant oils are applied to trees and shrubs to control aphids, spider mites, and scale. Dormant oils can be sprayed on deciduous trees before buds pop.

Dormant pruning for Oaks and Elms should be done before April 15th. This pruning will help prevent insects with disease from attacking trees.

A pest that will start to appear when temperature rise are Viburnum leaf beetles, if Viburnums were damaged in the previous year, there is a good chance that leaf beetles have laid eggs in the tree. Dormant oils can be applied to prevent the eggs from hatching. A follow up insecticide spray can be applied in April in case some eggs were to hatch.
